1. CREATE, Singapore, Perkins&Will
Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise at the Singapore National Research Foundation--combination of outdoor space with overhead cover and exposed spaces. successfully integrates the indoor and outdoor as well as usable transition space. Makes the outdoor feel cozier and the interior feel more spacious.
2. Green Sculpture
Great way to bring a sense of nature and complexity into an otherwise simple space. Really creates a contrast with the white as well. (what great staircases!)
3. Farnsworth House, Mies Van der Rohe
One of the originals-Van der Rohe created a space that literally showcased the outdoors and used the landscape to add to the interior.
4. 3-Form
Now has the option to incorporate natural products between pressed glass to create a more open and natural environment

Bringing the outdoors in is such an important design feature that makes almost every design successful. Nature is a natural healing agent so using nature elements in healing environments is important.
ReplyDeleteIncorporating nature into designs can create a restorative environment. I often struggle with using nature in new ways but often simple touches such as large windows or forms can directly relate a space to nature as you mentioned in your article.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of 3-form. Often when trying to incorporate nature, it becomes a habit to think about it so literally. I think the idea of using products such a 3-form with subtle reminders of nature is just as effective.
ReplyDeleteI think your post did a great job in highlighting the different ways we can incorporate nature into our design. It is so much more than adding plants to the interior, it is how the architecture of the building integrate and interact with the element of nature.
ReplyDeleteNature in design helps bring the outdoors inside. Its such an important component in a successful space. Its aesthetically pleasing and helps bring in more natural light to connect the outdoor and indoor together. The use of glass and 3form are being use in such a creative and effective way within the spaces mentioned above.
ReplyDeleteNice post Tara! I think that you address some very important issues here. Today we spend something like 90% of our time indoors, so "bringing the outside in" is an important concept to implement. It's really cool to see that companies like 3Form are listening and are starting to tailor their products to meet the changing needs of their clients.
ReplyDeleteWe are aware of the the positive impacts that are associated with bringing the outdoors in has on human beings in all types of spaces, especially in workplace, healthcare, and even education. Your examples show great ways to implement this into design and shows that applications and techniques are endless.
ReplyDeleteUtilizing natural light and bringing the outdoor are very efficient and crucial things to consider for interior designers/architects. I like the idea of 3-form since this could be beneficial for some spaces where the exposure to outside is limited like our interior design studios.
ReplyDeleteI especially love this topic because I find nature so relaxing and refreshing after being inside all day. 3-form is fantastic because you can bring the natural textures in as a visual partition to a space without having a solid wall so it is essentially killing two birds with one stone. I also love how Mies Van de Rohe showcased the exterior of the building more than the interior. That is definitely something to consider whether or not it would be possible to achieve in our projects.
ReplyDeleteI love your choices of spaces and products to showcase. It was a good range that shows many ways you can utilize the idea of bringing the outdoors in.
ReplyDeleteI could never understand why the Farnsworth House was in Illinois and not on some beautiful island...until I saw the views of the river from the inside of the house. Now I want a house similar to it - someplace to just get away and reconnect with nature, even if it is along a river in Illinois.
